Pitching Oprah Magazine: How to Get Featured in O Magazine & Instantly Skyrocket your Sales

By Rachel Rays Gift

oprah

Getting featured in O, the Oprah Magazine, is like winning the Academy Award. It’s a distinction that validates your product like no other publication.

In fact, getting featured in O helped raise one entrepreneur’s sales by 60% in just 30 days. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. The mention brought much needed awareness to a cause close to her heart–breast cancer. Thanks to Oprah magazine the issue is now visible on a grand scale.

Knowing how valuable it is to get featured in O, you must consider your competition and understand that, just like The Oprah Winfrey Show, the standards at the magazine are some of the toughest in the industry. O magazine prides itself as a publication valuing beauty, courage, attention to the finer points of relationships, and people doing amazing things in the world.

Here Are 3 Things You Should Know If You Want to Be Featured in O, The Oprah Magazine:

1. Your product packaging must be beautiful.

If your product packaging and product itself isn’t an eye-stopper, it’s most likely not going in O, The Oprah Magazine. Jeanine Boiko of J9 Public Relations, who placed her client Bonjour Fleurette in the magazine three times for three different products, has this rule of thumb:

“For a product to work in O, ask yourself this: if you walked past your product on the shelf somewhere, would it catch your eye and make you stop? It must have unique, attractive packaging that will photograph well. My advice, especially to new business owners, is to not play it cheap with packaging. At the end of the day, it’s all about the draw of your packaging.”

2. Your pitch must be meaningful.

So, before you make a pitch, heed the advice of The Oprah Magazine Executive Articles Editor Dawn Raffel who says the magazine teaches people how to live their best life: “It’s about realizing your own greatest potential and also about making a contribution to others.”

Whether you want to write about yourself, be written about, or write about someone else, ask yourself these two questions :

Are you making a difference in a big way?

Are you making a difference in a way that is important to Oprah?

Genevieve Piturro, founder of the Pajama Project, gets a “yes” on both counts. Her charity gives new pajamas to abused and poor kids, many whose mothers are in prison. Some of these children never owned any pajamas, and certainly not new ones. When you think about children going to sleep at night in a fresh pair of pajamas instead of tattered, dirty clothes, it conjures an image of safety and home.

Pitturo scored big on two points: She tapped into one of Oprah’s key areas of importance: abused children. And she created a remarkable endeavor that attracted many people’s interest, given the story’s emotional pull. It made me want to hurry and buy pajamas and donate money to this worthy cause.

3. Your pitch must be well-written.

O’s readers expect the content to dig deep into emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being on many levels. Oprah’s magazine delivers on this expectation by seeking out top authors and freelancers from the best national magazines and newspapers in the country. They look for writers from publications like the New York Times to Wired to write on topics as diverse as women slavery to how men really feel about ****** implants to the death of a beloved dog.

You can either be interviewed by these experienced writers or write a feature on a topic that touches the heart of the O magazine reader.

It may take you 1 to 2 years to get published in O, The Oprah Magazine. But I’ve haven’t met one soul who said it wasn’t worth it.

Henry David Thoreau said, “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” So if getting in O is one of your dreams, keep advancing toward it with all the steadiness of a tulip reaching toward the sun.

Three Healthy Recipes for Weight Loss

By Rachel Rays Gift

healthy recipes

when you are starting a new weight loss program you can be lost about what to eat. No problem! Here are some great foods that are easy to make and are healthy.

Ginger White Tea

White tea is a delicate tasting tea that is complemented by soft flavored herb and spices. This tea has just a touch of ginger to give the drink subtle layers of flavor.

INGREDIENTS:

- 1 bag of Tetley White Tea or another comparable White Tea brand

- Boiling hot water

- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger

- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

- Sugar substitute (optional)

PREPARATION: Place the ginger and the white tea bag into a mug or teacup and pour the boiling water over the top. Cover and let steep for 2-4 minutes. Add a sugar substitute if desired and stir. Makes one serving with zero calories.

Low Calorie Turkey Ball Soup

This soup is hearty and filling. You can serve it on cold nights as a main dish, or on the side with a sandwich. Turkey ball soup also makes a great lunch. It only has 178 calories per a two cup serving, so fill up!

INGREDIENTS:

- 1 pound ground turkey

- 2 cans mixed vegetables

- 3 teaspoons beef bouillon

- 1 ounce dry pasta

- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

- salt and pepper to taste

- 1/2 gallon of water

PREPARATION: Fill a large pot with water and add the canned vegetables, bouillon, pasta and seasonings to it. Put the pot on high heat while you prepare the turkey. Prepare the turkey by rolling small pieces into balls the size of jelly beans and then add the turkey balls to the pot. Let the soup cook until it is boiling and the turkey is well cooked.

Healthy Pasta Dinner

Kids love this dinner because of all the textures and tastes. Broccoli is nubby, the pasta is firm, the sauce is smooth, and the chicken is chewy. It is a winning combination.

INGREDIENTS:

1 lb. package of frozen broccoli

12 oz. package of Smart Taste elbow pasta (or another kind of high fiber pasta) cooked

1 tbs. Italian seasoning

1 clove of garlic

Salt Butter flavored cooking spray

2 cans chopped chicken ****** (You can also leave out the canned chicken and serve the pasta with a whole chicken ****** or fish.)

Salt

PREPARATION: Steam the broccoli, then drain it and toss with pasta and chopped chicken ******. Chop garlic into small pieces. Spray a small saucepan with cooking spray and add the garlic and Italian seasoning. Pour garlic over the pasta mixture and toss. Add salt to taste. Serve immediately.

The Supposed Hoodia Oprah Connection Exposed

By Rachel Rays Gift

oprah

If you’ve shopped around for hoodia online you’ve likely read about the supposed hoodia Oprah connection. You’ve probably seen claims that Oprah Winfrey endorses hoodia or that she uses it herself to reach her weight loss goals. You may have even seen such bold claims that Oprah endorses a specific hoodia product. You’ll be surprised to learn that there may not be any truth behind the hoodia Oprah connection.

I’ve seen some claims that hoodia was “seen on Oprah” or that “Oprah uses hoodia,” but I haven’t seen any evidence to support these claims. I’ve never heard of hoodia being featured on her television show nor have I read anything that supports the claims that she has used it. In fact, if you go to her website and search for the term, “hoodia” or “hoodia Oprah” you don’t get any search results. Until I can find concrete evidence that she talked about it on her television show or that she uses it, I don’t believe there is any Oprah hoodia connection as far as her television show is concerned.

There is a minor hoodia connection, however, in Oprah’s magazine, O, that many websites reference as proof that Oprah endorses it. The article all these websites refer to was published in the July 2005 issue of her magazine titled, “Diet Pills: The Next Generation.” I wasn’t able to find an archive copy of the article anywhere online so I purchased the issue on eBay to find out what exactly Oprah Winfrey supposedly said about hoodia. I was very surprised what I found out.

When I turned to the article I saw a large picture of a San tribe member holding a piece of the hoodia gordonii plant. I immediately thought there was probably a significant connection after all. However, after reading the entire article there was absolutely no hoodia Oprah connection. The article wasn’t even written by her and there were no quotes from Oprah about hoodia.

The article opens with the first two paragraphs briefly talking about the history of hoodia and the popularity of hoodia diet pills. However, the article doesn’t talk very highly of hoodia supplements. In fact, here is a direct quote from the article, “So far, however, there’s little proof that the supplements are even mildly effective: Most contain only small, probably insignificant levels of Hoodia extract…” This is hardly a ringing endorsement for hoodia supplements – let alone a specific brand of hoodia!

The rest of the article goes on to talk about how pharmaceutical firms are racing to come out with the next miracle weight loss supplement. There is no mention of hoodia at all beyond the first two paragraphs. As you can see, there is no hoodia Oprah connection at all – at least not through her magazine.

What I’m surprised is that Oprah’s legal department hasn’t come down hard on these websites that use her name and her magazine as an endorsement for hoodia. Often times these websites twist the magazine article so far that they make it sound like Oprah herself endorsed their brand of hoodia in her magazine. The next time you see claims that Oprah endorses hoodia or that there is some kind of hoodia Oprah connection, you’ll know the truth.

More Spiritual Insight’s From Oprah’s Soul Series

By Rachel Rays Gift

oprah

Elizabeth Lessor is co-founder of Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY and author of “Broken Open” and “The Seeker’s Guide.”

Omega is a Mecca for Spiritual Seekers all over the world who come there to commune with others on the spiritual path. Everyone there has a commonality: they are seeking community and connection with one another and with the larger whole.

When Oprah asked Elizabeth Lesser to define spirituality, she said that it is a state of complete fearlessness, detached from all worry and anxiety.

Elizabeth used Michael J. Fox as an example of such fearlessness because he said he welcomed his illness, Parkinson’s, and if given the choice, he would choose to become ill again.

The lessons he learned were that valuable.

Elizabeth and Oprah covered three topics: Death and Dying, the Law Of Attraction and religion, and the AHA experiences Oprah, Elizabeth and those listening and watching the program had as a result of watching the entire Soul Series.

Elizabeth was the person who compiled exercises for “A New Earth Webinar,” and these can be accessed on Oprah’s website.

Here are some examples of “The Awakening Exercises” that Elizabeth put together for the world wide audience:

1) Take any routine activity that normally is only a means to an end and give it your fullest attention.

Choose one or two activities that you do routinely, (such as washing dishes, or walking from point A to point B), and bring your fullest attention to these.

2) Listen to the voice in your head. Ask yourself: Am I the thoughts that are going through my mind?

Or am I the one who is aware that these thoughts are going through my mind?

3) Become aware of your breathing. Feel the air flowing in and out of your body. Feel your inner energy field. All that you ever have to deal with and cope with in real life–as opposed to imaginary mind projections, Is This Moment.

Ask yourself what “problem you have right now, not next year, tomorrow or five minutes from now.”

Ask yourself: What is wrong with this moment?

In reality, the moment is perfect, but it’s my thinking that makes it less than beautiful.

4) Give up the waiting as a state of mind. When you catch yourself slipping into waiting, snap out of it! Come into the present moment. Just Be, and enjoy Being. If you are present, there is never any need for you to wait for anything.

When someone says, “Sorry to keep you waiting,” you can say, “That’s all right. I wasn’t waiting, I was standing here enjoying myself.”

And so on, an exercise for each chapter of Tolle’s book.

Elizabeth continued in Oprah’s interview, by saying that all humans are afraid and insecure but we all think we are the only ones experiencing the fear.

So much time is wasted in trying to be perfect.

Elizabeth said, “The soul is the river of energy which animates who we are. When you follow this river of energy, it’s almost impossible to go wrong. This flow can lead you to your own greatness if you follow it with an open mind.”

Oprah asked Elizabeth what her “Broken Open” experience was.

Elizabeth cited her divorce because of the shame and terror she felt surrounding the experience. She felt like she lost her financial stability and learned that what you resist, persists.

She learned to stop fighting and judging the experience, and in the process, learned to go through it, healing into wholeness.

She learned that the divorce itself wasn’t the problem, but the acrimony causing disharmony was what harmed everyone involved.

The greatest gift you can give your children in any divorce is to co-parent cooperatively and authentically, she said.

Religion and the Law Of Attraction (LOA) was the next topic.

Oprah said that when her one time minister told the congregation that God is a jealous God, she had an instant awakening.

She thought to herself, “I thought God Is Love.”

Wait a minute, Oprah thought. Is God jealous or is God Love?

And thus she began the process of thinking for herself.

The LOA is one part of the spiritual journey. Elizabeth said that LOA is the faith that whatever happens is meant for your growth in this (and all) lifetimes.

LOA is choosing a vibrational frequency that harmonizes with a higher frequency and vibration, such as love, joy, transcendence and peace.

The last of the great human freedoms is choice in how you respond to the circumstances in your life.

Each circumstance leads to the next lesson in your evolution.

Universal energy is present for you to use in order to allow you to become a better person.

Set your intention, and show up fully. Pray to be used for a power greater than yourself.

Don’t pray for things.

Elizabeth said that Jesus came to show us Christ Consciousness, because He was a Revolutionary.

When we get stuck in dogma, we are blinded to the prophets of our time.

Death, dying and grief was the next topic.

Elizabeth said that grief is a badge as to how much we loved.

In our society, we get three days of bereavement (if that) and then, back to work, full speed ahead, without time to fully be with the sorrow and the memories.

Oprah and Elizabeth discussed the custom of wearing black for a full year, allowing “time” to move through the loss, to be alone and to sit with it.

This slowing down and sitting with the pain frightens people. Many are driven to the doctor for a prescription for anti-depressants.

We can prepare ourselves for the Big Deaths in our lives by fully participating in all the little losses in our lives.

An example of a little loss, according to Oprah and Elizabeth, is no longer being 20 or 30, when we were considered to be “Babes.”

Now we are considered to be Wise Ones by all the “Babes” we commune with!!

The last topic was the AHA moments people experience as a result of watching the Soul Series.

One person described a shift in her consciousness as she listened to Eckhart Tolle describe living fully in the present moment, without labeling experience or making assumptions about it.

My own personal AHA experience was listening and watching Jane Bolte Taylor discuss and describe her stroke. I also read her book, “A Stroke Of Insight.”

Then I contemplated my own mother’s stroke, and found great peace in the realization that my instincts about my mother’s experience as she was having her stroke was right on.

First of all, she appeared to be free for the first time in her life.

She appeared to be experiencing a spiritual transformation.

Yet people all around me were saying or thinking, “How terrible that your mother had a stroke.”

And I was with her when she died, and was touched by such a love that for a period of several days, I felt no judgment or resentment towards anyone.

I was in a broadened, boundary-less dimension.

I was touched by a loving spirit, the stroke and eventual death of my dear mother.

Secretly, I rejoiced in the great beauty and grace of the Universal Energy.

And I knew that there is nothing to fear.
